Dave Lloyd's 2 Cents

A .NET Developer's Perspective

Golf should be 12 holes.

I'm looking for investors!

This idea will change golf forever. I think I can at least double this industry's revenue with one small inexpensive change.

I want to open a golf course where a round of golf is 12 holes. Don't go, hear me out.

I golf occasionally. I would golf more but it takes too damn long. I don't have 4-5 hours in a day to spend golfing. Not to mention the time spent at the 19th hole.

Inevitably every time I golf I get to about the 14th hole and I spend the rest of the game wishing it was over.

12 holes just makes sense. Here are some reasons why.

  1. You could play 6 holes in the morning before work without having to go to an executive course.
  2. However over lunch you could easily play a 6 hole executive course.
  3. All the courses out there now don't have to change anything but the numbers at each hole. Every 18 hole golf course just has 3 6's.
  4. They can get more people golfing starting 3 at a time like they do on 27 hole courses now.
  5. If a round is just over 2 hours instead of 4. More people can golf in a day.
  6. It will be easier to get a tee off time.
  7. More people would golf because they wouldn't be saying “I wish this was over” on the 14th hole.
  8. More people would golf because it would be less expensive.
  9. Yet the courses would make more due to the increase in volume and staggered tee offs.
  10. For the avid golfer who wants to spend more time on the course. They can still do 18 by golfing 12 and then the  front 6 again.
  11. Some people even say they want to golf two full rounds or 36 holes. No problem, for 36 holes you would get in 3 rounds that day.

Now there are people who don't like change. These people will say golf has always been 18 holes and that it's a tradition. This is not true. Please read the article below. ( I could have just typed this in but it's much more effective this way, don't you think)

OK, so who wants to be in on the ground floor of this.

Maybe you don't want in? But if you have more reasons why golf should be 12 holes please share them with me.

Dave, you're a madman! What's next? Only 7 frames of bowling, 6 inning baseball games, only 2 peanut butter cups in a package?!?

No good will come of this, mark my words ;-)

Almost as crazy as Gary Bettman wanting 4 quarters in a hockey game. He's already got them wearing the dark jersey's for home games.

Dave, I think this is a brilliant idea. Set it up at PetitionOnline and I will gladly sign.

Finally someone with an open mind.

As for the comments about me being crazy. You know they had Galileo killed for his ideas.

  • dave May 31, 2004 1:56 AM

First off I'm a golf fan so you will never sell me on the 12 hole idea. It's that 19th hole that gets ya everytime.

  • dave May 31, 2004 4:00 PM

Mike You are not looking at it with an open mind. The beauty of it is you can still golf 18 holes if you want. There is still a 19th hole, but for some it could be the 7th or 13th. You need to read the Blog again. This time think outside the box. :)

I think it's a great idea! Last time i golfed 9 holes on a real course it took 3 hours... ok so there may be a problem with the golfer there, but I like the idea of a cheaper round of golf too :) Especially when you're still learning!

This is a direct Quote from Jason Barr of the Edge 102.1 on your FM dial.

After reading my Blog he emailed this reply.

Its true. Only hardcore lonely men can take all 18 holes. I can't do anything for 5 hours.

Dave I have to say, this is a fantastic idea. The only golf I play right now is the 9 holes at Rock Chapel, precisely because it takes such a short amount of time. At the same time, 8 of it's hole are par 3's. I would love to be able to play 6 holes of decent length and call that a round.

Isn't it bad enough we live in a world where everything is supersized, superhighway, superstore, ultrafast, quicklube,overnight,nonstop,sameday,all-in-one,micro this, macro that, just in time, mass transit, mass production and mass mayhem? Is it sooo hard to find 4 or 5 hours once a week or so to enjoy a game of golf? Have we asked ourselves why are we so busy? How will our generation cope once we retire? Do I ask too many questions?

Part of the game is to getaway from all this, relax and enjoy life. The thought of playing before work or even worse, during lunch is crazy. If people can't find 5 hours to play golf once in a while then we have a problem.

If it's a case of boredom, then play 9 holes and piss off, but don't go changing the history of the game for the rest of us.

That's it, argument over, I win.

    Roman

  • dave June 12, 2004 10:19 AM

Sorry Roman but I'm affraid that is far from Argument over. I think the people who disagree
don't understand one important part of this plan. By Making a course 3 6's instead or 2 9's holes nothing changes for those who want to golf 18. And I have the mathematical data to back this up. see -> (2X9=18 and 3X6=18)

How can you argue with mathematical data.

But for those of us who do want to golf 12 or 6 we can. Why are golfers so selfish? We are taking nothing away from you. But you are taking the enjoyment of a nice game away from us. We just don't want to, or have the time for all 18 holes.

And some people do want to golf at lunch and before work. Business deals are made on golf courses. Many Many business deals. You can't deny that. When is a busy executive supposed to practice. The driving range is only good for so much.

I LOVE it! I am also pining for the clubhouse after about 13 or 14 holes. Some cruel bastard course designers also put what seem like mile long par 5's as the 18th. That's just cruel and unusual.

Roman: You don't win you doorknob. You said "don't go changing the history of the game" when Dave clearly demonstrated that the game used to be shorter.

I say GO FOR IT and count me in!!!

  • dave June 14, 2004 4:23 PM

Mr. Totzke...I appreciate your support. But please refrain from calling my friends doorknob. :)

  • dave June 28, 2004 1:48 PM

    Dave,

Everything that you have said here is brilliant. It is without question the greatest change to come to the game since the ball retriever.

I would suggest the most compelling reason would be the 6/12 pack for beer. 6 Holes and 6 beers. 12 holes and 12 beers.

I would like to point out that 12s have benefit mankind in many other ways. Doughnuts, eggs, and hotdogs to name just a few.

Dave L has once again ridden the crest of a new wave.

  • dave January 22, 2005 8:05 PM

And get only 2/3rds of a $1,000,000 for a win?

    &*^%$ off!!!

  • dave January 27, 2005 10:14 PM

In all honesty I like the idea, but Dave has been 'selling' this idea as long as I've known him, I'm sure you can find better places to put your money, like hockey fans getting to see a hockey game in '05!
